Why Third exists

1 in 3 women experience violence in their lifetime.
A number so shocking and yet widely accepted to be underreported.

Because for something to be counted, it has to be recorded.

What is being counted?

The Office for National Statistics reports that 1.6 million women
experience domestic abuse every year in England and Wales.

These are the cases we can see.

And what isn’t?

Police

4 in 5 women don’t report rape to the police

Healthcare

80% don’t disclose to a professional, even when attending GP & A&E

Criminal Justice System

Less than 1% of rape cases end in conviction.

Most women never reach the systems built to help them.

65% of women were turned away from refuge last year.

Not because they didn’t need help -
but because there wasn’t space.

The system is underfunded, fragmented, and breaking.

  • It takes, on average, 7 attempts to leave safely

  • It can take 2.5 years to reach effective support

That’s a long time to feel like you’re dealing with something alone.

  • "I didn't report it because I wasn't even sure it counted as abuse"

  • "I was scared it would make things worse if I told someone."

  • "We have children together. I couldn't just blow everything up."

  • "I thought no one would believe me"

  • "I tried once. The response made me not want to try again"

  • "He worked in a position of authority so reporting him didn't feel like an option"

We don’t think women should go through it alone.

Third gives women a safe space to keep a secure record of what they are experiencing.

No pressure to report.
No action triggered.
